[2009.5.18]Advice in Influenza A (H1N1) outbreaks

As of 10:00, 18 May 2009, Japan has officially reported 92 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection in Kobe and Osaka. We are facing the possibility of an influenza pandemic because the human population has no immunity to this novel influenza virus. However, the new influenza is considered less deadly than some previous viruses, and we ask you to react calmly and not to panic. To reduce the risk of infection, we recommend you to stay home if possible and avoid crowded settings and close contact with others. Take measures for usual cold prevention such as washing hands with soap and water, gargling, wearing a mask, covering your mouth when coughing, and practicing good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active. Please make sure 2-week emergency food is stored at your home!
It is reported that people are rushing into convenience and drug stores and flu masks were quickly sold out. This has caused overcrowding and has increased the risk of infection. You do not have to check every drugstore in your town for masks. Just staying home is often a better prevention method than looking for masks in a crowded place.
We also recommend you to check the fliers on the influenza A(H1N1) published by Hyogo Prefecture and to get updated and reliable information through TV, Internet, etc.
